Neurodiversity & Trauma

Supporting Children with Complex Needs in Out-of-Home Care.

With Dr Vanessa Spiller, Clinical Psychologist, Educator, Author, and Parent to a young adult with complex neurodiversities.

Many children in Out-of-Home Care  have complex care needs. They may have multiple diagnoses, such as Autism, ADHD, FASD, ODD, cPTSD and more. These conditions and experiences require a different set of parenting skills and expectations, without which we see high rates of child and carer distress and placement breakdown. Unsupported, these can also lead to criminal justice involvement.

Many carers, support workers and schools are overwhelmed by this complexity and, despite having lots of assessments and information, often struggle to know where to start in supporting these complex young people.

Dr Spiller has been working with complexity for nearly 30 years. A clinical psychologist and former foster carer, she has extensive practical experience supporting children with complex neurodiversities and trauma as well as their parents and carers. The author of two books, "Explained by Brain" and"Mind the Gaps," her approaches are informed by national and international research, best practice guidelines, and real-world and lived experience.

This training will:

Use brain-based abilities to explain neurodiversity and trauma rather than focusing on diagnoses alone.

Explore how brain functioning impacts everyday skills and abilities including complex behavioural symptoms for children in OOHC.

Teach simple tools for mapping brain-based abilities and functioning (not diagnoses). These will be explained and practised.

The "Explain by Brain" framework will be introduced, and its application to neurodiversity and trauma will be explained.

Show how to use ability and functioning mapping to plan interventions that support the brains of individual children.

Apply the framework to common behavioural symptoms, such
as stealing, lying, verbal and physical aggression and more.

Use these tools to teach participants how to advocate for support, including funding support, of children with complex needs in schools and with the NDIS

Cost: $325 (+ GST)
Venue: Online

Please note participants are expected to have a basic understanding and prior training in supporting children with trauma.
