Understanding and Managing ISB in Children with FASD and other Neurodevelopmental Conditions

Children with FASD and other neurodevelopmental conditions are vulnerable to sexual abuse and victimisation. They are also at increased risk of having inappropriate sexualised behaviours (ISB).
Many professionals are unsure how to best understand and support this complex issue. They seek to support and increase the skills of the individual without relying on shame and punishment but they also need to manage the safety needs of others.
Dr Spiller has been working with complexity for nearly 30 years. A clinical psychologist and former foster carer, she has extensive practical experience supporting children with complex neurodiversities and trauma as well as their parents and carers. The author of two books, "Explained by Brain" and "Mind the Gaps," her approaches are informed by national and international research, best practice guidelines, and real-world practical experience.
This training will:
Highlight the prevalence of this issue in people with FASD and other neurodevelopmental conditions.
Explore the range of factors that can contribute to ISB in these groups.
Explore the role of brain-based abilities and functioning in ISB.
Discuss the concept of "Counterfeit Deviance".
Teach simple tools for mapping brain-based abilities and functioning (not diagnoses) that impact on ISB.
Demonstrate how to use these tools to plan individualised interventions that address core issues contributing to ISB.
Explain the different skills needed to say, do and behave appropriately in different situations.
Provide participants with the tools to advocate for support, including funding support, of children with ISB in schools and with the NDIS

Please note participants are expected to have some prior understanding of neurodiversity, inappropriate sexualised behaviours and trauma in children. This training is suitable for professionals with some prior experience in this area of work.
